The 5th Annual Exhibition of the Society for Contemporary American Art featured 25 works of painting or sculpture by American artists like Gertrude Abercrombie's The Secret, Francis Chapin's Third Grade Scholar, O. Louis Guglielmi's The River, Hans Hofmann's The Great Interior in Blue, Ben Shahn's Contemporary American Sculpture, Kurt Seligmann's The Legend of Flying Man, and George Keck's Landscape. The artworks included in this exhibition were selected by members of the Society, which in turn, vote to select the which will be the gift of the Society to The Art Institute of Chicago. It is the purpose of the Society to provide an interesting program throughout the year, but primarily, to provide The Art Institute, through the means of our exhibition, with one work of painting or sculpture by an American artist. This year, The River by O. Louis Guglielmi was selected as a gift of the Society.
