Bill Goldston, who succeeded the late Tatyana Grosman as head of Universal Limited Art Editions, will escort us through the Exhibit which has just been mounted on January 18, 1990. ULAE was formed in November of 1955, and during its existence has raised print making in the United States to a very high level. Mrs. Grosman was fond of saying ?the key is to do everything ourselves.? Her devotion to the artist and to the ethic of excellence caused Calvin Tomkins to write that ?It was at ULAE that print making lost its stigma as craft ? as minor art ? and became a legitimate form for the highest aesthetic ambitions.? ULAE has published the work of such major artists as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, Jim Dine, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell, Cy Twombly, and others, and The Art Institute now owns perhaps the most definitive collection of ULAE work in existence.
