Irony and Contemporary Art Representing a new generation of art critics, Jim Lewis will present the lecture ?Irony, Honesty, and Sincerity in Contemporary Art? on November 12, 1996 at 6:00 p.m. in the Restaurant on the Park. He will more specifically trace the history of these three rhetorical tactics in the visual arts over the past forty years. He will focus on what he takes to be the gradual abandonment, in the last decade or so, of irony as an appropriate form of response to the world. Lewis is contributing editor and writer for Art Issues, Harper?s Bazaar, Frieze, Parkett, Spin, and The Village Voice. Mr. Lewis has been a lecturer at Columbia University, Art Space in San Francisco, the San Francisco Art Institute and has authored numerous books, film treatments, short stories and catalogues.
