The Society for Contemporary Art at The Art Institute of Chicago is proud to present Kerry James Marshall, Tuesday, September 30, 1997. For our first program of the season, we are pleased to present Chicago artist Kerry James Marshall. Since his inclusion in the Art Institute?s recent Americas Show, ?About Place?, Mr. Marshall has emerged as an artist of international stature. His current work is on view in this year?s Documenta and the Whitney Biennial with a solo exhibition planned at the Renaissance Society in the near future. He is also a recent recipient of a McArthur Foundation Grant. Kerry James Marshall?s large representational paintings represent a departure from the more abstract explorations of other contemporary Chicago artists. Mr. Marshall explores themes of race and urban culture with a dignity and monumentality which align his work with the western tradition of historical painting. At the same time, his use of contemporary street culture as subject matter ties his work to Imagists of the preceding generation of Chicago painters.
