The Society for Contemporary Art at the Art Institute is proud to present: Byron Kim in a presentation of his recent work. Byron Kim is one of the most exciting young painters on the scene today. He is best known for his series of monochromatic paintings based on representations ranging from skin tones or a celadon vase to the varying hues of a late evening sky. Mr. Kim?s work thrives at the point of distinction between abstraction and representation and it is the tension between the two that gives his work its vitality. His work pays tribute to the monumental traditions of twentieth century abstractions from Mondrian to Rothko, whose work aspired to be sublime, timeless, and universal. In recognition of this tradition, Kim makes nearly monochromatic paintings of great aesthetic purity and beauty. Yet the paintings? titles call attention to the representational nature of his paintings, recalling colors and textures of subjects with great specificity. Born in 1961, Byron Kim has had a number of significant recent exhibitions including shows at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C., the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, and a two person show with the artists Kiki Smith at Max Protetch Gallery in New York.
