The 16th Annual Exhibition of the Society for Contemporary American Art featured 40 works of painting or sculpture by American artists like George Cohen's Who May Be Called Man , Leon Golub's Birth, Franz Kline's Vawadavitch, and Hedda Sterne's New York. The artworks included in this exhibition were selected by members of the Society, which in turn, vote to select the which will be the gift of the Society to The Art Institute of Chicago. It is the purpose of the Society to provide an interesting program throughout the year, but primarily, to provide The Art Institute, through the means of our exhibition, with one work of painting or sculpture by an American artist. This year, New York by Hedda Stern and Black Chart by George Muller were selected as the gift of the Society to The Art Institute of Chicago.
